Saturday, April 21, 2007 WAR Marches on the Money Men – Eastside – Part 1 Demo #1 - Wayne Merkelsen, Novartis – General Counsel After a strong day of educational outreach in Manhattan’s trendy SoHo neighborhood, activists headed to the home of Novartis General Counsel and Tax Department head, Wayne Merklesen. New court restraints, imposed just in time for World Week, required that we move 45 away from Wayne’s residence. As luck would have it, this placed us on one of the busiest streets in lower Manhattan. We unfurled our banner at the corner of Broadway & 10th Street and we were thrilled by the response. Pedestrian traffic stopped to read signs and ask for literature allowing us to explain the connection between the bloody mutilated beagle puppies on our signs and literature and how Novartis continues to fund cruel and abusive animal testing. Demo #2 - Derryck Maughan, GlaxoSmithKline Director Next we headed up to Park Avenue to re-visit the posh digs of GlaxoSmithKline Director, Derryck Maughan. Once again, the new restriction took us further away from the buffoons that guard the front door and who regularly ridicule and laugh at the pictures of the horrific cruelty that goes on every day at Huntingdon Life Sciences. Instead of having to put up with their lame behavior, our demo was held around the corner on Park Avenue. Literature was distributed to interested passersby, many of whom walked their canine companions. Demo #3 - James Robinson III, Chairman of the Board, Bristol-Myers Squibb A short distance away, also on Park Avenue, we visited the home of James Robinson III next. Mr. Robinson is Chairman of the Board of Directors of drug giant Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) whose corporate executive offices are in New York City. For the third time today, we found that the court ordered restrictions actually put us in a much more visible and heavily trafficked place. Once again, this neighborhood is so dominated by animal lovers that we enjoyed a great degree of support. Many of Robinson’s neighbors shook their heads in disgust at BMS’ continued dealings with the puppy killers at HLS.
