International Day of Protest Against the Japanese Dolphin Slaughter

Organized by the New York Whale and Dolphin Action League, New York City activists were able to represent at the Japanese Consulate Office in participation of the International Day of Protest Against the Japanese Dolphin Slaughter. A coalition of several local groups, which included Win Animal Rights, endorsed a letter addressed to the Japanese Consul General expressing our outrage at the Japanese dolphin slaughter that occurs annually in Taiji, Japan.

Protesters gave voice to their anger and disgust over multiple bullhorns. Voices were raised in chants like: “No more slaughter, no more pain…the Japanese government is to blame.” And “Innocent dolphins are under attack, what do we do…..Act Up, Fight Back!”.

Thousands of dolphins are herded into bays (the most well known is Taiji where as many as 2,300 dolphins will be murdered), where the water runs red with their blood as they are brutally slaughtered. Although they would love for you to believe that they are killing dolphins to feed people, the truth is that the local fisherman consider the dolphins “pests” that need to be exterminated.

Dolphins are intelligent, sentient and emotional beings. The slaughter of these magnificent creatures is a travesty and a gross form of barbarism. We challenge you to watch the video and tell us that this is morally justifiable. You can view video here:

“Your money, Your Fault…..Your Slaughter, Your Fault”….the activists shouted while fingers were pointed at the Japanese Consulate officials who gathered on the sidewalk to pal around with the NYPD officers sent to monitor the event. So much for impartiality and not taking sides. Also attending the event was a contingent from the social justive activists and anti-war protesters “Raging Grannies”. The RG’s entertained passersby and made their point through song.
