World Farm Animal Day

Although World Farm Animal Day is technically commemorated on October 2nd , the birthday of humanitarian Mahatma Ghandi, activists choose to staff an educational outreach table at New York City’s Union Square on the busier date of Friday, October 3, 2008. Union Square is a gathering place for social justice advocates and also the site of a weekly Farmer’s Market insuring a good crowd.

Leaflets and educational materials from the event's international sponsor FARM (Farm Animal Rights Movement) were displayed and distributed freely. A DVD players screened Meet Your Meat which drew the attention of many passersby.

Veg Starter Kits were offered and several vegan activists were available to answer questions. Many who stopped to chat told us that they only ate free range or organic meat and animal by-products. We explained about the myth of free range and cage free products and showed them pictures of the conditions that free range animals have to endure. Surely, they are no better off than confined animals. We urged them to move, at the very least, to vegetarianism and toward the ultimate goal of being totally vegan.

We thank FARM for providing outreach materials and for organizing this important event for animals that are suffering and dying in factory farms around the world.
