Jericho Movement Weekend of Resistance ![]() March to the United Nations and Rally | |
October 10, 2008 ![]() Activists gathered in New York City to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the founding of the Jericho Movement and the anniversary of their very first march in solidarity with political prisoners and POWs everywhere. This year the march and subsequent weekend events were endorsed by dozens of civil rights and social and economic justice groups including Win Animal Rights. Many gathered on 10-10 to march on the Untied Nations. Many groups marched behind colorful banners. Free Mumia, Free Leonard Peltier, Anarchist Black Cross, Support Eco-Prisoners and the SHAC 7 and many, many others.
During the march, the New York Police Department did their level best to herd the protesters and to keep traffic flowing. Spontaneous chants of “Whose Streets?….Our Streets!” erupted whenever police attempted to be overbearing. A moment of comic relief came when one NYPD squad car sounded it’s siren. In response, hundreds of activists mimicked the sound by shouting out “whoop…whoop….whoop….whoop….whoop” in imitation of the police siren. After the march, activists gathered in Madison Park around a circular fountain to hear speakers representing many of the organizing groups. Ashanti Alton, former leader of the Black Panthers and a political prisoner himself, introduced the representatives of the different organizations. Songs, chants and enthusiastic applause broke out randomly throughout the duration of the rally. The rally was empowering and all were eager to return on Saturday for the march through Harlem.
